The Importance of Being Active

Leading an active lifestyle offers countless benefits, both physically and emotionally. But being active can be difficult when you already have a jam-packed schedule. Today I want to share with you how important it is to be active and some of my favorite ways to incorporate physical activity into your everyday life.

First, let’s talk about the numerous benefits that result from being active. Being physically active helps you:

  • Live longer
  • Have more vitality
  • Sleep better
  • Manage stress
  • Move around more easily
  • Have stronger muscles and bones
  • Maintain or lose weight
  • Spend more time with friends or meet new people
  • Enjoy yourself and have fun!

Many people see physical activity as a chore rather than an opportunity to have fun. Use this time to relax and unwind. Forget about any stress and clear your mind. Allow yourself to let go and be in the moment. Now, it’s time to get moving! Here are some simple, inexpensive ideas for staying active while maintaining a busy lifestyle.

Be Active with your Commute.

active2If you are someone who lives somewhat close to your place of employment, then this is a great option to squeeze in a workout. Studies show that people who change their commute to walking or cycling often feel less stressed and are more creative. These human-powered travelers say that their commute has become a wonderful way for them to appreciate their neighborhood and city. Keep in mind that your destination doesn’t have to just be the workplace. You can also walk or bike to run errands or to meet up with friends.

Be Active on your Lunch Break.

active3Put your down time to good use by going to the gym for a quick sweat session. According to a study conducted by The Science Daily, people who exercised at work were more productive and had fewer sick days than those who did not exercise. If you don’t have time to get to the gym, take a walk outside with a coworker. It will give you a nice change of scenery and give you a true break before you return to work. Be Active during Commercial Breaks.

active4Most of us hate commercial breaks, but it’s the perfect way to sneak in a workout! Clear some space in your living room by moving any furniture that might hinder your ability to move. Set out a yoga mat, water bottle and any additional equipment you plan to use. Kettle bells are my favorite because they’re inexpensive and effective in toning and strength training for women. There are also plenty of routines online that are geared specifically for TV time. Check out these commercial break exercises from Women’s Health Magazine!

These are just a few of the many ideas I have when it comes to fitting physical activity into your everyday life. Being active is essential to living a long, healthy and happy life. I am more than happy to answer any of your questions or to provide some additional suggestions on how to help you become more active. Until then: Be Strong, Be Active, Be Mindful and Be In The Moment wherever you are in life.
